PlaceMUS XR

PlaceMUS XR develops cutting-edge digital tools for the ECCCH, using VR and AR to bring Europe’s musical heritage to life. Visitors explore places accross different Euroean cities and environments, in a multisensory journey, connecting history, arts, spaces, musical repertoires, objects, personages, and events. The project will be implemented through relevant case studies, chosen for the diversity of their genres and themes and audiences. At the same time, digital tools will be developed to enable the creation and integration of new contents and paths in the future.

PlaceMUS, in latin “placemus”, means: we are liked, we are welcomed, (from plăcĕo), or also: we pacify, we reconcile, (from plāco). It emphasises the experiential aspect related to the pleasantness of the encounter and interaction.

Objectives/ Mission

The project enhances appreciation of Europe’s musical heritage providing users with interactive experiences engaging at cognitive, aesthetic and emotional levels, through interactive VR/AR available online and on-site. It maps key musical routes, weaving together narratives of the musical event, of the cultural context, and of the place the music is connected to.
Emphasizing multilayered storytelling and acoustic simulations, it explores the interplay between music, architecture, and space. Digital tools also support the design, analysis, and evaluation of sound experiences in museums.
PlaceMUS XR project focuses on research, technological, and societal objectives, based on the interdependence of humanities, social sciences, and computer science domains.

Expected Results

Design and simulation tools will be implemented to 1) create, share, re-use, interactive contents, 2) analyse, design and verify interaction with visitors, for the benefit of museum curators, creative industries, students, and researchers.
The vast panorama of musical genres and their related places and objects are exemplified through relevant case studies but will also be extendable in the future thanks to the open tools that will be implemented in the European Cloud (ECCCH) and made available to content creators.
The project aims to offer high-quality experiences across three main usage contexts: the Museum, the Urban Space, and the Web.
