Connecting cultural heritage through digital twins

HERITWIN makes this data operational by bringing digital twin methods, semantic data, and participatory workflows out of theoretical frameworks into real-world practice. Tested across five diverse European pilot sites, the project bridges advanced technical innovation with everyday heritage management to ensure long-term preservation and digital accessibility.

HERITWIN directly supports the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) by eliminating data silos, reducing fragmentation and enabling interoperable access across heterogeneous cultural heritage resources and ensuring interoperability.
Its core objectives are to:

1. Streamline scattered 3D scans and archives into searchable assets.
2.  Build and validate site-anchored digital twins.
3. Establish shared semantic standards for cross-institutional data integration.
4. Engage local site managers and communities directly in digital workflows to
   guarantee long-term adoption.

HERITWIN will deliver open, reusable tools, including digital twin validation pipelines, AI-driven metadata enrichment, sensor networks for predictive maintenance, and XR environments for remote site access. Designed to fit both large institutions and resource-constrained bodies, the project will also provide professional training resources and EU policy recommendations to drive long-term, sustainable integration within the ECCCH cloud ecosystem.
