WALKING MEMORY
WALKING MEMORY helps communities whose stories are often missing from Europe’s digital heritage, such as displaced and diaspora communities, to record, share and preserve their memories. By combining oral histories, participatory mapping, augmented reality (AR) Memory Walks and digital storytelling tools, the project turns personal and collective memories into open, reusable digital heritage.
WALKING MEMORY is part of the Cultural Heritage Cloud initiative, being developed by ECHOES.
Objectives/ Mission
Our mission is to make Europe’s digital heritage more inclusive by placing community voices at its centre. WALKING MEMORY aims to: curate the stories of displaced communities; support co-creation and annotation; develop interoperable AR, GIS and 3D storytelling tools; ensure FAIR, multilingual data; test replication across Europe; build digital skills through Literacy Labs and Heritage Ambassadors; help improve the Cultural Heritage Cloud; and fund grassroots pilots through open calls.
Expected Results
By 2029, WALKING MEMORY expects to deliver: community narratives and annotations; 3 validated open-source tools for AR, GIS and 3D storytelling; FAIR datasets ready for the Cultural Heritage Cloud and EOSC; localised pilots and a Replication Toolkit; trained Heritage Ambassadors; feedback reports to improve the Cultural Heritage Cloud; and grassroots pilots funded through open calls. Together, these will strengthen social cohesion and intergenerational dialogue.
