The workshop, entitled The human in the loop’ ? Intersecting perspectives on the archaeologists’ future in the age of AI and automation will take place on the 12th June in Paris in a hybrid format.

AUTOMATA Multiplier Event 12 June

Background

The European research and development project AUTOMATA, in which Inrap is participating as a partner, aims to develop an innovative method for digitising movable archaeological remains using a combination of robotics and artificial intelligence. This raises a number of ethical and methodological questions, particularly regarding how the role of archaeologists might change within the knowledge production process. However, these questions also relate to the creation of artificial processes for capturing, rendering and analysing archaeological material. This form of artificialisation of archaeology poses a significant challenge to the future of the archaeological community and beyond.

Format

The morning will be devoted to walking workshops in small groups with AUTOMATA partners and selected colleagues. More information will be sent in due time by INRAP, the organiser, on this initial part of the day.

The afternoon is open to the public and will begin with a lecture by Professor Antoinette Rouvroy, FNRS researcher at CRIDS (University of Namur, Belgium), entitled “The future of the humanities in the age of AI: reflections on the semiotic, epistemological and political challenges of the algorithmic turn”. This will be followed by a round table discussion with the participants in the morning workshops (archaeologists, curators, lawyers, researchers and engineers) and the public. This event may be attended in person (registration required) or watched on the AUTOMATA YouTube channel.

Venue: Collège de France, Paris.
Time: Welcome coffee at 13h, the workshop is from 13:30 to 17:00.
Registration deadline: 5th June (for in-person attendance).
